NYC Mayoral Race Tightens
Candidates Mamadani & Lander Cross Endorse Each Other
June 13, 2025 / NYC Neighborhoods / NYC Politics Media & Government / News Analysis & Opinion / Gotham Buzz NYC.
On Friday, the top two NYC Mayoral contenders to Andrew Cuomo - Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander - cross endorsed each other for Mayor. This should help both of them as contenders and according to one pundit, reduces Cuomo's sure lock on the Mayoralty from 80% down to 60%. Which means Mamdani and Lander need to reach out to other NYC Mayoral candidates who realistically are no longer contenders, like Zellnor Myrie, Michael Blake, Jessica Ramos, and Jim Walden [running as an anti-corruption Independent] to increase their odds, while detracting from Cuomo's.
The photos above or at right were taken earlier this year at two different debates. On the left is NYC Comptroller Brad Lander and on the right is NYS Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani - the top two contenders for NYC Mayor following Andrew Cuomo. On Friday they cross endorsed each other, which will likely lead to increased TV ad spending by big real estate on their also-ran, straw horse candidates [see below]; as well as increased TV ad spending for attack ads trying to discredit real challengers to big real estate's choice for Mayor - Andrew Cuomo. Most TV political ads are such distortions of the truth, that they seem to be more fake news than informative.
Please do your homework on the candidates, using some of the high quality information sources below, to move up the learning curve on who the candidates are and who's funding them. TV News doesn't cut it any more, as it's controlled by billionaires. A long while ago, they rolled back FCC regulations requiring fair and balanced reporting, which is why what TV News presents today, is no longer consistently credible.

In Spite of Their Low Poll Numbers, Scott Stringer's & Adrienne Adams' Campaigns are Heavily Funded by Big Real Estate, in what Appears to be an Effort by big Real Estate to Manipulate the Election Result
Pawns of the Real Estate Interests? Have Adrienne Adams' and Scott Stringer's Candidacies been Funded by Big Real Estate to Ensure a Cuomo Win? I purposely left Adrienne Adams and Scott Stringer off the list above because - like Eric Adams - they seem to be big real estate pawns on the election chess board. Adrienne Adams has received nearly $1 million in campaign cash from big real estate, who are likely using her as a spoiler, to thwart the chances of the real reform candidates like Mamdani and Lander. Likewise, Scott Stringer, who spoke with forked tongue when he falsely told the public he wouldn't accept real estate donations. Since 2014, Stringer has received $859,000 from real estate aligned donors, and is reportedly accepting their cash now.
Are Stringer and A. Adams the Real Estate Industry's Straw Horse Candidates? And if Not, Why has the Industry Spent Million(s) to Fund These Two Improbable Candidates? Both Adrienne Adams and Scott Stringer have rarely polled above 5%, while Mamdani polls in the 20% - 30% range, and Lander in the low double digit [10% + ] percent range. So why is big real estate spending million(s) to fund these two candidates' campaigns, even though they have no chance of winning? Because big Real Estate knows these two candidates will draw votes away from the only two NYC Mayoral contenders who have a chance of defeating the real estate industry's most heavily funded and thus most heavily favored candidate - Andrew Cuomo.
Remember Billionaire TV News isn't looking out for you. Most of the NYC Mayoral commercials you see on billionaire TV News are funded in part by the same billionaires who want to keep you believing that their candidates, are your candidates. And their candidates are anything but, as we've seen via the Mayoralty of Eric Adams. The election of big real estate candidates is one of the reasons why the NYC government has grown so corrupt over these past four years.
TV News Contributes to the False Perception of a Housing Shortage in NYC
Why do pols like Adams and Cuomo keep asking voters to authorize them to give billions upon billions in public funding to big Real Estate for housing? And yet somehow even with all of that public funding, the imaginary housing shortage only seems to worsen. I say imaginary housing shortage because I know there are tens of thousands of affordable housing units being warehoused by landlords. So, given they claim NYC has a housing shortage, why aren't the Pols or TV News talking about all of these vacant units, many of which are rent stabilized?
You ask, what am I talking about? For starters look up how Eric Adams is warehousing 5,000 vacant NYCHA units, while trying to turn over ownership of FEC Chelse NYCHA to one of his funders, Stephen Ross of Related Companies. Also copy and paste the link at the end of this paragraph, which is a story that should get you started on your own journey to the full story [aka the truth] via the internet. Hopefully it will begin moving you away from relying so heavily on billionaire TV News for your voting and other information about what's happening in NYC, because they are failing you miserably and unfortunately for all of us, most of you don't even know it. Public Duty for the Public Interest
Voters Can't Make Good Decisions if They Don't Use Good Information Sources
Voters are making terrible choices, in part because they rely too heavily upon billionaire TV News for their voting information. And unlike TV News in years past, TV News is now looking out for their billionaire owners' interests - not the community's - which means not yours.
Seek out other information sources on the internet for the real scuttle butt on the NYC Mayoral candidates. We currently favor The City, Politico, Wikipedia, the Gotham Gazette, City & State, [as well as yours truly] as well as using the search engines and moderated social media outlets like BSky.app, to effectively do your civic duty to inform yourself BEFORE VOTING. The non billionaire TV News that I currently find reliable includes Democracy Now [on FNX & CUNY TV], PBS News Hour and PBS Documentaries are also very informative. See below for subsequent update on web news sources we currently hold in fairly high regard.
Control of the NYT & Washington Post have Changed Since the Turn of the Century
The NYT & Washington Post are still important sources for national and international news - but they [the NYT in particular] seem very much out of touch on local issues and municipal politics. Furthermore, I no longer trust either news organization [NYT & Wapo] on anything, as implicitly as I once naively did. Organizations change when the people change. In the case of the NYT, in 2017 Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. stepped down as publisher, and in 2020 he resigned as Chairman. His son took over both positions, so there's been a successional change of ownership, which seems to have alterred the organization's insight, intelligence and values.
Ownership of the Washington Post, on the other hand, changed in 2003 when Jeff Bezos acquired it. I'll admit that, surpisingly, at least so far, Bezos appears to have generally done a pretty fair job of stewarding one of America's most important newspapers. But that said, in January 2024 Bezos hired Will Lewis, a former Murdoch / Newscorp employee, to take over as Washington Post CEO and Publisher. Lewis reportedly played a role in the corporation's handling of the Newscorp illegal phone hacking scandal, and a subsequent email deletion and coverup. So unfortunately, arguably the two most important newspapers in America, are on their way down a slippery slope, which means we, the audience, can no longer trust them as we could in the past. And that means identifying other reliable sources, which are available, via the internet [see short list above for NYC]. Nationally Mother Jones and Wired Magazine have also stepped in to help fill the breach.
One last thing to consider is that, insanity is defined as doing the same thing over & over again and expecting a different result. The same is true in voting, as the very definition of insanity is voting for the same pols over and over again, and expecting that things will change.
In contrast to the collossal mistake made four years ago, let's try to get this one right. Early voting ends Sunday, June 22, 2025 and election day is June 24, 2025. Use this link to find your poll site - https://www.vote.nyc/page/find-your-poll-site
Currently Recommended News Sources to Help You Wean Yourself from Servile Dependence on Billioniare TV News. We currently favor The City, Politico, Wikipedia, the Gotham Gazette, Gothamist, City & State, Mother Jones and Wired, the browser Firefox curates a fair news offering, finance.yahoo.com is good for business news, and moderated social media outlets like BSky.app hace an intelligent audience that does a fair job of identifying key news reports, and use the search engines to look things up. Collectively these news sources should enable you to effectively do your civic duty to inform yourself about people and issues before voting. The NON-Billionaire TV News that we currently find reliable, includes left-leaning Democracy Now [on FNX & CUNY TV], PBS News Hour, and PBS Documentaries are also very informative. The Washington Post and New York Times are still fairly reliable, but not as implicitly so as in the past. Both the NYT and Wapo have undergone ownership / top management changes within the past six years. And the new management teams' values appear to differ from their predecessors, so pay attention to editorial changes / impacts. I no longer find any of the Network TV News outlets to be sufficiently informative. I doubt they ever were, but back in the day they used the newspaper reporting to help keep them informed, which today no longer cuts it. But that said, you can still pick up a few leads from TV News, which you can then use to more fully inform yourself, by doing further research on the internet.
