Things To Do This Weekend & Next Week in Queens NYC
Queens Memorial Day Parades, Events, Fairs - And BQE Billiards in Jackson Heights is Closing Their Doors Monday Night 5/25/26
Monday, May 25, 2026 - BQE Billiards & Bar Last Day of Business - After 35 years of serving Jackson Heights, Woodside, Corona, as well as Queens and NYC; BQE Billiards and Bar will close its doors at 34th Avenue at 70th Street in Jackson Heights. The pool hall, long a happy staple in the lives of Queens residents and visitors, decided to close their doors and move onto other ventures. The expansive pool hall will be open Monday, for lunch, dinner and snacks, as well as pool, billiards, ping pong, foosball, air hockey and other games. The popular pool hall was founded and run by the Katelas brothers, whose sons all worked at the pool hall, some intermittently, throughout their lives. It was generally a labor of love, which shows. Those who entered and enjoyed being a guest at BQE often found themselves parking their day jobs and worries at the door. I'm not sure how late they will be open Monday night, as generally they stay open until 3 or 4 am, but you can call 718.779.4348 to find out. BQE and its team will be missed.

Mothers Day, as well as Other Things to do This Weekend & Next Week in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx & Staten Island Events - Details Below
May 8, 2026 / NYC Neighborhoods / NYC Things To Do Events / News Analysis & Opinion / Gotham Buzz NYC.
The photo at right, is of a statue by Thomas J. Price, entitled Grounded in the Stars. The statue depicts an African American woman whom a considerable number of women seemed to cozy up to, on the eve of Mothers Day last year, when we took this photo. This year, there won't be any Mothers Day artwork in Times Square, but there are three performances of gospel music in honor of Mothers Day at the Palladium Times Square. See details below.
Sunrise 5.46 am. Sunset 7.59 pm. We're getting 14 hours & 14 minutes of sunlight, or five hours and 1 minute more of sunlight than we were getting the week of the Winter Solstice, on December 21, 2025 when the sun rose at 7.18 am and the sun set at 4.31 pm. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of this year, providing 9 hours and 13 minutes of sunlight in NYC.
NYC Weather - NYC Can Differ Slightly / Significantly vs TriState TV News Forecasts. There's a 65% - 90% chance of about 1/3 inch of rain between 10.30 am and 6 pm on Saturday and a 50% - 60% chance of about 1/3 inch of rain after 4 pm on Sunday. On neither day does rain seem like a show stopper, but grab your umbrella if you plan to be out during those times. On Friday and Saturday the temperature highs will be around 60, rising to 70 on Sunday. The temperature lows will be about 50 on Friday and Saturday, rising to the mid 50's on Sunday. The humidity will rise from 30% to 80% on Friday, and continue upwardly between 65% and 100% on Saturday, and then falling from 100% to 60% Sunday afternoon, before rising again. Winds are expected to range from 5 to 15 mph Friday, and then settle back down to 3 - 5 mph for the rest of the weekend. All tolled, a manageable spring weekend.

- We'll have more on this in our News Section - but it's disturbing to say the least, especially given that NYC Council Speaker Menin managed to convince or cajole enough NYC Councilmembers to vote for it. In Hamlet, Shakespeare said 'there's something rotten in Denmark'. Votes like this, convince me there's something rotten in the NYC Council.
